Sumo’s spiritual home in Tokyo — the national arena in Ryogoku, hosting three of the year’s six grand tournaments (January, May, September). If your trip overlaps a basho, this is the single best live sporting event in Japan: the pageantry, the salt-throwing, the sound of two rikishi colliding a few meters from your seat. Upper-tier reserved seats are cheap and totally fine; ringside is a splurge but unforgettable. The whole neighborhood is sumo town — stables, chanko nabe joints, and the Sumo Museum inside the arena itself. Book the moment tickets go on sale; tournament days sell out.
